Introduction

Welcome to ‘In the Years of the War’ – a collection of stories as told by some of the people of the villages of Diafani and Olympos in the north of the Greek island of Karpathos.

These are NOT stories about war itself but, rather, about the day-to-day lives of the local people struggling under foreign occupation between the years 1939 and 1947. They are largely verbatim transcripts of tales recounted by the locals to Manolis Makris, recalling their experiences and the hardships undergone during this time – not omitting some amusing aspects! Manolis published the entire collection, in Greek only, in his book 'ΣΤΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΠΟΛΕΜΟΥ'.

This e-book contains just a small number of those stories, selected by Manolis Makris’ brother, Giorgos Makris, and translated into English by Giorgos in conjunction with Bob Bowden, a long-time resident of the village of Diafani.
