The Coming of the Germans

Overview of the story

In September 1943, the Italians agreed to an armistice with the Allied Powers.

On Rhodes, fighting broke out between the Italians and their former German allies, which led to the surrender of the Italians. Karpathos, previously under Italian control, entered a darker period of German occupation.

Andreas Hirakis, Giorgos Drakos and Nikolis Kastellorisios recall their first encounters with the new occupying forces.
